Fallen Angel Hotel, Old Elvet, Durham

I imagine that wealthy barristers quite often pop in to the Fallen Angel for a bite to eat after a busy day arguing over complex legal matters. However, on a Sunday lunchtime the restaurant is purely a family affair.

Its stylish dining room is slightly let down by some plastic chairs, which look cheap and tacky.

The food itself, however, was anything but cheap or tacky. It was good value for money and very tasty.

I started with poached mackerel with garlic and lemon while Mrs E went for oriental duck breast with a crisp bean shoot salad, both at £4.50. It was a great appetizer for our main courses, £7.95. Mrs E decided to opt for lamb while I went for pork.

Both of our meals came with stuffing, but were lacking Yorkshire Pudding - a staple part of a Sunday lunch in my opinion.

All the veg were cooked to perfection - crisp to the bite and retaining their full flavour. We also had some very nice roast potatoes.

For dessert, £4.50, Mrs E went for coffee infused Crème Brulee with shortbread and a fruit compote. I went for poached pears in a spiced red wine sauce with ice cream. A nice end to a very enjoyable meal.
