Charles Bathurst Inn, Arkengarthdale, Richmond

I chose the beef, while She Who Must Be Fed opted for pot roast shoulder of lamb with white wine, tomato and honey sauce.

We were pleased to read on the menu that both the beef and the lamb had been naturally reared in Swaledale . . . a firm plus in our book. As we surveyed our surroundings I supped on one of the inn’s real ales – Black Sheep best bitter – but could also have chosen from Riggwelter and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. It wasn’t long before our food arrived and we were glad they were generous portions.

Both dishes came with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, mashed potatoes, broccoli, Savoy cabbage and carrot mash. It was a feast and a half.

There was also lashings of homemade gravy . . . a must for a successful Sunday lunch.

The meat was exceptional. The beef was cooked to perfection – not too rare, not too well-done – while Mrs Eats remarked that the lamb was packed with flavour.

The veg was superb, too, and the roast potatoes were some of the best I have ever eaten . . . crispy, fresh and with plenty of crunch. Eating this dinner was a delight and we cleaned our plates in no time.

When it came to dessert I was swayed by raspberry Eton mess, while the wife chose sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

The Eton mess was served in a sundae glass and had quite a tart taste. I wasn’t sure if it was down to the raspberries or a flavouring, but it was enjoyable, as was Mrs Eats’ pudding.

Other choices on the menu included poached pears in spiced wine and white chocolate and Cognac creme brulee.

While we enjoyed the desserts we both agreed the highlight had been the main meals.

The Charles Bathurst is a stunning venue set in a breathtaking location and has food to match . . . the perfect spot for a day out.
