The Angel, Main Street, Corbridge

My pint of Nell’s Brew, brewed just down the road, slipped down a treat and Mrs E sipped a Diet Coke while perusing the menu.

For starters, she went for prawn cocktail, but I decided, as we were being posh, to try the salad of mustard leaf, rocket, feta cheese, sun-blushed tomatoes and olives, which came dressed in olive oil. Oh yes, I can be quite a gourmet when the mood takes me!

Both our starters were top-notch, but at £4.95 each, we were expecting good things.

Four roasts were on offer for the main course, along with supreme of salmon and a vegetarian pasta dish, all at £10.95 each. You could also have a bigger portion of a couple of the starters for £8.95 if you fancied something lighter.

A small appetite is something that Mrs E and I have never suffered from, so we both dived in and opted for the roast sirloin of beef with Yorkies.

Whoever dished up in the kitchen obviously fancies himself as a sculptor, as the plates were a sight to behold, with two huge, thick slices of meat balanced on top of a heap of perfectly-cooked carrots, green beans, cauliflower and boiled and (slightly soggy) roast potatoes.

On top of the beef was a huge Yorkie and the whole thing was served with lovely thick gravy.

The menu had warned us that the beef was served pink, and it certainly was, just the way I like it. When I pointed out to She Who Must Be Fed that the roast beef she cooks is like shoe leather by comparison, she went in a huge huff and a cloud of gloom hung over the table until the dessert menu arrived, which cheered her up no end.

I went for the caramel apple betty with gingerbread ice cream and definitely made the best choice, as She Who Must Be Fed confirmed after polishing off half. Mrs E’s meringue nest with strawberries and Chantilly cream was nice enough, but she pointed out – a little too loudly, in my view – that for £5.50 she expected the meringue to be home made, and she suspected hers wasn’t.

By now, she seemed to have forgotten she wasn’t speaking to me, which was a shame, as I fancied a nice quiet drive home.

However, Mrs E had other ideas, and insisted on our now traditional walk along the river.
