Mr and Mrs get famous

A CULT classic returns to television as All Star Mr and Mrs hits the small screen.

Remember the original Mr and Mrs from Border Television, with Derek Batey as the host?

It’s been given a modern makeover with daytime TV stars Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton at the helm.

And celebrities replace members of the public answering questions about their better halves.

Among those taking part are former Newcastle councillor, now Lib Dem MP, Lembit Opik and Cheeky Girl partner Gabriela Irimia.

Darlington comic Vic Reeves and his partner Nancy Sorrell are also set to answer questions about one other.

The presenters say it was a good idea to get celebrities involved.

Phillip said viewers should look forward to getting an insight into the world of Lembit and Gabriela.

He said: “I mean, that’s almost like watching a very slow car crash, maybe not a major car crash, more of a minor shunt.

“It’s something that you just can’t keep your eyes off and that is one of showbusiness’s most unlikely relationships.”

Fern said: “Vic and Nancy are the sweetest couple and very funny.

“Their whole persona, well, when we see them anyway, is just laughing and joking and bouncing off each other in a very happy way.”

Phillip said the show scrubs up well with a 2008 feel.

He said: “Mr and Mrs is a fantastic format and I’m thrilled that Fern and I have been given the huge responsibility to give it the 2008 treatment.

“We’ve got a terrific team to work with who’ve managed to secure some stunning and surprising guests.

“Fern and I have a brilliant time on This Morning and The Soap Awards, so it’s exciting to be together on a Saturday night.”

Fern paid tribute to the original host of the show.

She said: “I remember Derek Batey, who was absolutely lovely and immaculate. You could imagine him smelling of wonderful soap and cologne, and he always had beautiful pink shirts on.

“I absolutely adored the show. It’s the simplest format which just works so well and it’s so engaging . . . you can’t beat it.”

V ALL STAR MR AND MRS, ITV1, Saturday, time to be confirmed.
