COMEDIAN Lee Mack celebrates the 1960s heyday of the great Northern clubs in a four-part series.
The biggest names in showbiz were attracted to the clubs.
But stories abound of how acts were often interrupted mid-song by announcements such as: “The pies ‘ave come.”
Acts were controlled by the all-powerful concert secretaries and committees armed with stop-watches to check the exact time they were allowed on stage.
Anecdotes include Russ Abbot’s run-in with a stroppy concert secretary, and how Les Dawson invented his famous act.
