Why do we sing?

GARETH MALONE became an overnight celebrity when he took part in BBC2’s The Choir, turning a group of state-schooled teenagers into angel-voiced choristers within a matter of weeks.

Now he’s back with the BBC, exploring the evolution of the human voice.

It’s quite a scientific look at the how our voices have changed over time, but there’s a big problem which out host himself highlights . . . we have absolutely no idea what Neanderthal man sounded like. The documentary as a whole may just be conjecture, but it’s a thoroughly interesting journey all the same.

U WHY DO WE SING?, Radio 4, Tuesday, 1.30pm.
