Ride time for cyclists

AS the temperature soars, there has never been a better time to swap the steering wheel for a set of handle bars. Getting out on your bicycle can benefit you physically, mentally and socially, as well as being good for the environment. ALEXANDER FELTON reports.

It isn’t only the physical benefits that Laura highlights, but also the way that cycling can improve our general mental condition and overall mood: "A lot of people don’t realise how it can have effects against depression and anxiety as well."

Laura says that cycling is also an ideal way to meet new people: "There are many benefits socially. Some people come by themselves and make new friends quickly. Often they end up going on their own rides with the people they meet. They also get to see a lot of the local area."

Although the majority of cyclists are recreational, there are a few who decide to go and join competitive local cycling clubs, as Laura explains: "Some people do want to go further and if anyone needs any help then I would call up and ask the relevant cycle club.

"Obviously I want to help them pursue their interest and go on to become a better cyclist.

"Recently we’ve had a couple who have gone on, and if any intermediates want to push themselves a bit further that’s really the reason why we have initiated this new course."

Laura added: "Cycling is spreading and it is now very popular with the general public."
