DIETICIAN and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Sian Porter said: "People should check with their GP before embarking on the programme.
"Everybody has a different effective way of losing weight. These types of diets can be effective but part of the problem is that you have to start facing food at some time.
"What can prove dangerous is when people pick and choose which bits of the programme they would like to follow
"We would endorse a diet plan where you have a variety of food, the appropriate amounts and at the right frequency. Obviously, accompany this with physical activity."
A spokeswoman for LighterLife said: "Sheila has done fantastically and managed to lose half of her body weight with LighterLife.
"She had always dreamt of getting married but, at 24 stone, never had the confidence to do so.
"After losing 12 stone with LighterLife she was able to fulfil her dream of walking down the aisle with her long-term partner and we wish them all the very best of luck in their future together. Sheila is just one of the 150,000 people LighterLife has helped lose weight and keep it off since 1996."
The diet was invented in 1996 by Jackie Cox, 57, and Bar Hewlett, 61.
During the weight-loss phase, dieters using LighterLife Total must see their doctor or health care professional each month.
LighterLife offers two programmes depending on how much weight you have to lose . . . LighterLife Total, a very low calorie diet for people with a BMI of 30 and above, and LighterLife Lite, a low calorie diet for people with a BMI of 25 to 29.9.
