Birds nest causes house blaze

A FIRE broke out after roofers accidentally lit a birds nest with a blow torch.

The incident happened at around 11.50am yesterday at a house in Alston Crescent, in Fullwell, Sunderland.

Crews from Sunderland, Fulwell and North Moor fire stations tackled the blaze in under an hour.

Officers believe the fire spread when the birds nest ignited foam insulation while workmen were felting the roof of a bay window.

Two men in their 40s were self-rescued from the property and needed no medical treatment.
