I HAVE spoken before about councils with an exaggerated sense of their own importance, and the latest example comes from the East Riding of Yorkshire.
There, a fine upstanding council official threatened elderly residents of a sheltered housing scheme in Bridlington with jail for feeding the birds. Bird seed can, admittedly, be a nuisance, but this was taking it a bit too far.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has admitted it was heavy-handed.
But it remains a concern that council officials up and down the country continually try their luck. All they need is a stick-on moustache, a funny salute, a click of the heels, and you have a battalion of desk-bound Adolf Hitlers.
