FOUL-MOUTHED Gordon Ramsay clearly went too far when he likened Australian TV presenter Tracy Grimshaw to a pig.
However, I can’t help feeling the Aussies have over-reacted somewhat to a remark that was obviously an attempt at humour, albeit a misjudged one.
There was, apparently, a barrage of complaints after the incident, including one from the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
If there’s one thing that irks me even more than celebs showing off or trying to shock, it’s politicians taking an unhealthy interest in popular culture.
Like Gordon Brown expressing concern for Susan Boyle when she went into rehab. For F-Factor sake Gordon, I don’t give a flying Tracy Grimshaw what you think about Susan Boyle . . . get your mind back on the economy, and sort out the greedy pigs in your party while you’re at it!
Quite why Gord’s counterpart Down Under felt the need to get involved in a showbiz spat is beyond me. Doesn’t he have bigger burgers to barbecue?
Maybe he and Gordon are more interested in column inches than politics. Spell out your plans for fiscal recovery or achieving C02 emissions targets and everyone dozes off.
At best, you can expect a few paragraphs in The Independent. But express concern for – or put the boot into – a celebrity and you’re likely to feature in all the tabloids. You might even spark a debate on Radio 5 Live.
Ms Grimshaw, described as Australia’s answer to Fern Britton – minus the gastric band surgery, presumably – wasn’t the only one to feel the sharp end of the chef’s tongue.
Ramsay is reported to have accused weather girl Lavina Nixon of “not knowing her f***ing ar*e from her elbow”. He also “jokingly” told a female make-up assistant to turn around so he didn’t have to look at her “fat ar*e” and accused another woman of having “f***ing breath stinking of caffeine”.
It would appear that Ramsay – irresistible hunk that he is – doesn’t mince words when the opposite sex don’t measure up to his exacting standards.
Does he have a mirror at home?
