Let drivers sort it out

THE A1 and A19 will become two of the most gridlocked roads in the country by 2041, according to the experts.

There are many possible reasons for this . . .

1. It’s where the Labour party are going to put David Abrahams, his proxies, everyone who knew about his secret donations, those who should have known, and those who did not ask the right questions. Quite a lot, then.

2. It’s where Northern Rock are going to store all the old account books no one wants any longer. Again, quite a lot, along with all those reject letters from the Northern Rock Foundation that will be sent out next year.

3. It’s where Newcastle United fans will leave their dreams of silverware, Sunderland fans will leave their hopes of staying in the Premiership, and Boro fans will abandon the successes of the past as a fond memory . . . you won’t be able to move for them.

4. Planners have got it wrong and have caused gridlock with too many traffic lights, no-car lanes, and poor management.

And it will, says the RAC Foundation, get worse. Much worse . . . unless we build more roads.

Why don’t we sack the whole lot of them, the planners who plan, the schemers who scheme, and let drivers get on with it.

Remember Carlisle a few years ago when floods wiped out the traffic lights? For a while there were no lights and, you know what, it worked better than before. It is, sadly, back to normal.

So, instead of saddling drivers with more restrictions, the powers that be should simply leave it to us.

We’ll put our foot down and get past the obstacles on our own.
