WATCHED the BBC Sports Personality of the Year last week. Was it me or were most of the nominations for teams or people who came second best in their chosen disciplines?
British sport, always the bridesmaid, never the bride . . . and sometimes not even invited to the wedding.
So, for a bit of a laugh, here are some alternative nominations . . .
Jonny Wilkinson . . . for raising his game only once every four years.
Paula Radcliffe . . . for drawing attention to the lack of public conveniences by having a wee on the street in the London Marathon.
Steve McClaren . . . for services to foreign football.
Christine Ohuruogu . . . for not being there for her drugs test.
Any sporting achievement, of course, should be applauded, so let’s congratulate them for doing what they did. Except Steve McClaren.
Just a thought, but it would have been great to hear more of the rank and file as well as the 10 big-name finalists.
There were thousands of guests from clubs great and small, and it would be nice to see their stories given greater prominence.
