KK debacle leads to a rare apology

I COULDN’T have been more wrong.

When Kevin Keegan was appointed manager of Newcastle United in January I said messiahs always get crucified.

I said the backlash will come sooner rather than later and the fickle Toon Army would one day demand his sacking.

Well, the backlash came, but it wasn’t for Keegan. It was for the money men on the board of directors.

The makeshift sign displayed by fans last week said it all . . . “Keegan in, Ashley and Wise out”. It is a scandal how a club with so much potential should get it so spectacularly wrong.

It’s alleged that Keegan’s bosses effectively tied his hands behind his back over the transfer market. And the club was made a national laughing stock.

To the fans who called this newspaper in January to say what a prat I was . . . you were right.

The outpouring of support for Keegan has convinced me that I was very wrong.

And you don’t hear me say that often.
