Changes written in the stars

IT’S time to say so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye, adieu to you, and you and you and you.

Off you go, David Beckham, Jedward, and the bloke who married Kate Winslet. Time to move on.

David Beckham will not be playing in the World Cup after tearing his Achilles tendon. It was a cruel end to a glittering career, but it was nature’s way of saying he was getting on a bit and it’s time to retire.

Quite how much contribution he would have made on the field in South Africa is up for discussion.

He may not have been the player he was, but Becks would have played his part.

He may still have something to contribute if he goes as a VIP guest. There’s still a place for him as a non-playing inspiration to the English team. It’s not the role he wanted but he can fulfil it admirably.

X Factor twins Jedward, meanwhile, have been axed by music giant, Sony, after one single. It was, in case you’ve forgotten or were never interested, an instantly forgettable song with old rapper Vanilla Ice.

Now, although signed up by another label, they will probably have to be content with being a novelty act. Which is, let’s face it, all they were in the first place.

Finally Kate Winslet’s marriage to Sam Mendes won’t go on and on after all. The couple’s relationship hit the iceberg after six years.

The Titanic star and the director, both Oscar winners, will go their separate ways. It’s sad for all of them but time marches on, circumstances change, and there are new roles to play.

Moving on can be hurtful but, whatever the cause, it is inevitable and it’s best to grasp the future, whatever it holds, with both hands.
