Tough lesson

THE problem with getting rid of a central government dictatorship, as promised by the new Dave and Nick show, is what to replace it with.
Local government dictatorship, as in giving town hall mandarins carte blanche to do what they want, doesn’t always work.
Just look at the mess pen-pushers make of running their little worlds in car parking and town planning.
And now we have the spectre of even more dictators in the classroom. It will now be easier for schools to opt out of local government control and, incidentally, a lot of the safeguards and regulations that go with it.
Local authority mandarins may not be perfect but they are a lot better than pushy parents riding roughshod over checks and balances to get their pet projects running.
