Fashion fascists

I’VE always regarded Asbos as a way for police and councils to throw their weight around without bothering with niceties such as a criminal conviction.

Now, from next month, we really have fashion police, with Asbo-style orders given to kids who wear gang colours – even if they have not been convicted of a crime.

The intention is laudable but it is open to abuse by authorities, who could wield a big stick just because, say, sections of society wear the same shirts and hats.

Before long, mark my words, the law will be used against rival football supporters.

Given a Asbo for wearing black and white in Sunderland or red and white in Newcastle? It could happen.
