FOOTBALL might be a game of two halves, but it is also a game of four chances.
Four chances, that is, for the so-called home nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The reasons why each bit of the UK can compete separately in international competitions are lost in history but, basically, it gives us four chances when other countries have one.
All four of us usually squander those chances, but that’s another story.
There seems to be a growing demand within FIFA for just one British team.
No England, no Scotland, no Wales, no Northern Ireland. Just Team GB.
It might have more to do with giving us a bloody nose over the corruption scandal than tidying up a historical anomaly, but why not?
France has one international team despite heavy regional differences. So does Germany.
We would be the first to complain if Holland wanted separate national teams for North Holland and South Holland.
One country, one proper Prime Minister, so why not one national football team?
It’s not as if England couldn’t do with the extra help.
It would shake things up a bit but, when the dust settles, it might make us stronger.
