Well done you slags

CONGRATULATIONS to all the student slags in Durham . . . you’ve done the city proud.

I refer, of course, to members of the university’s Sustainable Living Action Group who are not only green but, apparently, ever so slightly blue.

SLAG was awarded a national prize this week for a series of eco-friendly initiatives, including one to rid the city centre of bags . . . plastic ones, that is.

Student humour hasn’t evolved much over the years so I can only assume the unfortunate acronym is deliberate.

It puts me in mind of the former Newcastle Polytechnic’s proposal to change its name to reflect its newly acquired university status.

It almost became the City University of Newcastle upon Tyne until someone pointed out the unfortunate acronym.

Now that definitely wasn’t deliberate.
