New movie is a ticket to learning

YOU would expect the director of a new film to recommend it to as wide an audience as possible. But I think Mark Herman has honourable intentions beyond boosting his own bank balance when he says he believes parents should encourage their children to see The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, released on Friday.

The film, a 12A, examines the relationship between the son of a Nazi and a Jewish boy who is being held captive in a concentration camp. It’s grim stuff and there’s no happy ending, but it’s a period of history all children should be taught about.

And sometimes a bucket of popcorn with a large fizzy drink makes for a far better learning environment than a stuffy classroom.
