‘Risque’ Ross is a bore

NEVER mind the slight spot of bother in the Middle East or the piddling issue of our free-falling economy.

It seems nothing has divided the nation more than the suspension of Jonathan Ross.

At the risk of making a sweeping generalisation, I’d say the split has been largely between older and younger viewers.

My generation — and Ross’s, as it happens — haven’t missed him at all.

They didn’t look forward to his comeback on Friday night with eager anticipation or regard the show as “must-see” TV.

They had better things to do with their time.

Lewd comments and childlike banter aside, there’s absolutely nothing remotely risque about Ross’s chat show.

Beneath its supposedly edgy facade, it is what all such shows are . . . a crude vehicle for celebrities with something to plug.

Ross knows this, and tries to spice up the boredom with his embarrassing, overly-chummy asides.

Such as asking Tom Cruise if he breaks wind in bed. Groundbreaking TV, eh?
