Brown’s a fighter

GORDON Brown put thoughts of his own survival battle to one side yesterday to commemorate a far more significant one.

The Prime Minister was in Normandy to mark the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

It was an opportunity to reflect on just what can be achieved when those united against a common enemy pull together. The irony can’t have been lost on him.

And his party’s in-fighting will surely only increase in the wake of disastrous local election results . . . with surely more grief to come today when the European results are known.

I’ve been among the Government’s critics, but as I watched Brown chatting – seemingly carefree – to our war heroes, I couldn’t shake the feeling that he still has a lot to offer.

He has made mistakes, but he has also had the most appalling luck. He has been blamed for an economic meltdown that was largely beyond his control.

And Labour has taken most of the heat for the expenses scandal, even though MPs from all parties were guilty.

Brown may yet survive to fight another general election . . . but whether he’s as tough as the Normandy Vets remains to be seen.
