One rule for all? Not quite

I’M fine with rules being rules – as long as there is one rule for all.

Yes, I know that may not quite make literal sense, but you know what I mean.

And you will certainly know what I mean if you look at recent events surrounding Justin Gregory and Sir Alex Ferguson (above).

Justin who? Sadly, you’ll never know, as the FA vetoed Havant and Waterlooville’s plan to bring forward a league fixture to Wednesday gone in order that their left-back could serve a one-match suspension before the club’s dream FA Cup tie at Liverpool yesterday.

Rules is rules, see. No discretion allowed.

Which is strange, as I can’t see how anything other than the FA’s discretion spared Ferguson a disciplinary charge, never mind punishment, for charging a touchline making “up yours” gestures (at either opposition coach or fans – or both. There, I’ve said it, now sue me) at Reading last Saturday.

Or anything other than a complete lack of bottle.
