Cook worthy of England role

IF Geoff Cook doesn’t want to coach the England cricket team, that’s fair enough.

But if Cook, pictured below, hasn’t been considered for the job, that’s a scandal.

If there is a better qualified candidate to succeed Peter Moores than the man who brought silverware to Durham, I’m not sure who it is.

On pretty much every level, Cook measures up.

Coaching success — a la Peter Moores — in county cricket? Check. Two trophies, including one Championship (and one very near-miss) in two seasons, to be exact.

Experience of nurturing young talent? Check. For proof, go watch the likes of Harmison, Collingwood, Mustard, Onions, Plunkett and others.

Played Test cricket? Check.

The only thing that might be said to count against Cook is that he has no international coaching experience.

But the England candidates who have are mostly tainted by failure. And look at the success currently enjoyed by Gary Kirsten, a relative coaching novice, with India.

No, Geoff Cook is more than worthy for the England job.

The question in my mind — though, knowing his modesty, not in his — is whether the job is worthy of Geoff Cook.
