But no matter what Steve Bruce may say, there was never any need for a sequel at the Stadium of Light this coming January.
AC Milan’s interest in the bizarrely-bearded David Beckham means the truth of the words spoken in apparent jest by Bruce on Wednesday night will not be put to the test.
Bruce’s comments during ITV’s commentary on the England game had some suspecting he may have been keen to land Becks on loan.
If so, then Milan’s move for the veteran must be seen as a close shave for Sunderland.
It goes without saying that, on paper, Beckham would improve the Black Cats squad.
In practice, a tight-knit, star-free Sunderland squad treading a carefully-plotted path would only be tripped up by the baggage he brings. Just ask LA Galaxy. Hirsutes you, sir? No.
