SO we finally have definitive proof – if any were really needed – that Michael Owen didn’t fancy it at Newcastle last season.
Proof, too, that the man is similarly detached from something else . . . reality.
After winning the Carling Cup with Manchester United last Sunday, Owen said: “I’ve played for teams that have not been doing well. I’d prefer to be playing a lesser role somewhere where I am training with top-quality players, knowing that when you play, it is in a game like this.”
A lesser role? Lesser than what?
Lesser than failing miserably to keep Newcastle from being relegated?
Lesser than banking more than £100,000-a-week while he was at it?
Lesser than starting 58 of 148 league games played by Newcastle while he was on the payroll?
“Disappointed”, was how Owen described his mood last summer following relegation for United (Newcastle, that is).
It doesn’t go close to summing up how I still feel about him.
And I bet he’s a bit more than disappointed now his season – and any hope of a World Cup – is over.
I think it’s called natural justice.
