IMAGINE if Fabio Capello had struggled to make an appearance at each and every Premier League ground in his first two years as England coach.
I very much doubt he would still be England coach.
So how come Capello’s rugby counterpart can get away with being a relative stranger to Kingston Park, Newcastle?
Martin Johnson may have some trusted spies – no more so than former Newcastle coach John Fletcher – keeping tabs on up and coming Falcons, but what prevents him from gauging their form and fitness at first hand with the slightest regularity?
I wondered that after reading that Tim Swinson, probably Newcastle’s player of the season, had failed to win an England Saxons call-up for next month’s Churchill Cup, let alone a place in the England squad proper for the summer tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Not that I would say as much to Johnson’s face, of course. If only because I doubt he’d find his way to Consett.
