OUTRAGE registered on the faces of many people this past week as they were threatened with fines for not bringing their wheelie bins in on time.
So far, it’s only residents in Dawdon, near Seaham, who are being targeted. But don’t be surprised if this new policy is rolled out across many places.
Durham County Council claims that neglected bins are a prime target for arsonists and thieves. That’s probably true. But we are all working longer hours to pay for this country’s debts so how the heck can everyone manage to pull in their wheelie bins within 12 hours of them being emptied? We don’t all work for the public sector where working hours are generally fair and reasonable.
If we didn’t have so many bins there wouldn’t be as many for thieves and arsonists to target.
Also, I thought that council bins belonged to the local authority. They give us bins to fill and our council taxes pay for bin men to empty them. They’re not our property, so how can we be fined?
So here’s a solution. Why doesn’t the council supply big bin liners with which we can line the wheelie bins. Then it’s a case of leaving the bin liner rather than the actual bin? I might try that next week. Oh I better hadn’t – I might get fined.
