BRITAIN will get the chance to force itself back onto the world boxing map in Munich's Olympiahalle on Saturday.
While I think Derek Chisora has bitten off more than he can chew by taking on WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, I will be rooting for him all the way.
Last year was a disappointing one for British boxing and we ended it without a major world title.
However, Saturday is a massive opportunity to fight for one of the greatest titles in sport!
I know “Del Boy” from our amateur days and I hope he does a job on the 6ft 7in Ukrainian.
It would be brilliant for British boxing.
Chisora was not in the Britain team as an amateur, but we both won senior ABA titles in 2005 – me at light-heavyweight, him two weights up at super-heavyweight. He turned professional straight after.
Saturday’s is a fight to look forward to and Chisora seems very confident as it gets closer, helped by encouragement from one of the country’s all-time greats, Lennox Lewis.
I saw an interview where Chisora told the champ he is going to knock him out within eight rounds.
I am a fan of the Klitschko brothers – they seem like gentleman and great role models and have very professional and confident attitudes.
However, as the last person to beat Vitali, in a very close fight nine years ago, Lewis knows what he’s talking about. He said: “Vitali is very good but Chisora has a chance. He is a heavyweight. All it takes is one punch on the chin to win.
“I always say if you walk into the ring you have to get wet.
“If he (Klitschko) is in the fight, in the ring, and he gets punched, there is a chance he might get hurt or knocked out. It will be an interesting fight.”
Chisora, who did his last preparations in his hometown of London before heading to Germany today, said, “One good shot is all I need to topple Klitschko,”
Let’s hope he’s proved right.
