£2000 insurance grab-back foiled

A BUNGLING insurance company cocked up a couple’s payment on a cancer claim.

Bright Grey proved themselves not very bright after overpaying Scott and Carolyn Sawyer by £2000. Then they demanded the money back.

Scott, pictured left, told me how the company had settled a critical illness claim when Carolyn was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney. He said: “The settlement included interest and backdated payments. The money was used to pay off the mortgage on our house. In the meantime, Carolyn had an operation to remove the tumour and is recovering very well.

“Then Bright Grey said they had overpaid the amount of interest and wanted it back.”

Scott, of Blyth, Northumberland, said the money had already been spent to cover the mortgage.

Bright Grey, admitting an administrative error, offered to reduce the amount by half. Then, responding to my inquiry, they scrapped the lot.

A spokesman said: “Bright Grey has written to the Sawyers to apologise for the initial error and confirm that the overpayment does not need to be paid back. We are sorry for any distress this has caused.”
