Court threat over old bill

ENERGY supplier npower told a couple to pay a bill or be taken to court.

They threatened action against Keith and Pauline Douglas for an alleged debt of £123.

Just one problem . . . the bill was for energy used before they moved in.

Now the couple, of Sherburn Village, County Durham, have received an apology.

The bill has been cancelled and they also received a small goodwill payment of £25.

Their daughter Deborah Halliwell said: “My parents were hounded by npower over this bill.

“They have finally been told they are not liable and have been given a small amount of compensation for the stress.”

A spokeswoman for npower admitted there had been a mistake involving a previous occupier.

She said: “There appears to have been a mix-up of communications as the chase-up bills were forwarded to the Douglases. We have cleared the outstanding balance so they don’t owe us anything.”
