THE offer was acceptable, £4300 for new windows and doors from Finishing Touches.
It sounded all right to Dorothy Laybourne so she signed a contract. Then she discovered a neighbour had been offered a cut-price deal for £2000 less on a similar job.
Dorothy, of Jarrow, South Tyneside, was not impressed and wanted to get out of the contract. It appears that her neighbour had refused the quote. Dorothy said: “My neighbour got a phone call from Finishing Touches offering the same windows at half price.
“My neighbour told us straight away because she didn’t like to see us paying more than we had to. I tried to cancel but was told we had to go ahead with the job because it was outside the seven-day cancellation period.”
Company spokesman Norman Mitchell said: “I rang Mrs Laybourne this morning to offer a deal of a lifetime similar to the neighbour’s. She didn’t want to go ahead and we have accepted the cancellation. If she doesn’t want them, she doesn’t have to have them.”
He said it was normal practice to offer deals to save a sale.
