‘Poultry’ amount offered in Tesco turkey row

A SUPERMARKET has launched an investigation after allegedly selling a dodgy turkey. Malcolm Pratt bought the foul fowl from Tesco’s branch at Chester-le-Street in County Durham, only to find . . .

Well, let’s hear what Malcolm, also of Chester-le-Street, has to say about it. He said: “It was a fresh turkey with a use-by date of five days later.

“When my wife went to prepare it that night it was obvious it was off. It had a strong, horrible smell. We had guests coming for lunch next day and we were unable to obtain a replacement.

“Tesco refunded the cost of £21.31, apologised, and offered £10 compensation, which I consider to be derisory.

“Had the council offices been open at the time I would have kept the turkey for them to examine, but I didn’t want it in my fridge any longer.”

Tesco admitted the turkey was in-date but claimed even a short time out of the chilled cabinet can reduce the life of a fresh product.”

A spokesman for Tesco promised a probe into the sale. He said: “We are currently investigating this issue and have offered the customer a goodwill gesture by way of apology for causing him any inconvenience.”
