I passed the inquiry to the Benefits Agency within minutes of Joanne’s call and waited for a response.
A spokesman explained what Job Grant was. He said: “When Mr Harriott stopped claiming Jobseekers Allowance, he was entitled to a Job Grant which aims to bridge the gap between a customer’s final payment of benefit and first receipt of wages.
“Job Grants are payable at two rates, £100 for single customers and couples without children, and £250 for lone parents and couples with children.”
The spokesman admitted something had gone wrong.
He said: “Mr and Mrs Harriott do have children but, unfortunately, this fact was not recorded on Mr Harriott’s Jobcentre Plus account and so he was erroneously paid at the lower rate of £100.
“Once this was brought to our attention, and we had updated Mr Harriott’s account with the names and dates of birth of his children, we were able to make a further payment of £150 to bring the Job Grant up to the correct rate.
“We would like to apologise to Mr Harriott for not paying him the correct amount straight away. It seems to have been an isolated error rather than a fault in our system and we are pleased to have rectified it with Mr and Mrs Harriott’s help.”
