Gas firm reduces repair cost

THE gasman has reduced a bill for repairing Paul Charlton’s botched DIY work.

Last month, in this column, I revealed how Paul accidentally broke a gas pipe while digging a trench in his garden.

He challenged the bill from Northern Gas Networks because he was charged £440.23 labour for a job where the materials cost just £2.37.

At the time, bosses said the bill had to stand.

But later there was some good news for Paul when they agreed to cut the amount. The bill was reduced to £360.01. Not a huge cut, admittedly, but a welcome one.

Paul, of Leadgate, County Durham, has since paid the revised demand.

He said: “I knew I would have to pay something but not as much as they originally asked for.

“They replaced a bit of pipe where we nicked it and put two connections in.”
