The bill included elements for three workers to travel to and from the job at overtime rates.
His dad, Terry – who took up the cudgels on his son’s behalf and asked me to write my first story – said he was pleased with Northern Network’s change of heart.
He said: “They have reduced the bill to just over £360. They knocked off the travelling money.
“I would like to thank you for highlighting the complaint.
“In a way, it was an admission of defeat on their part, but it is now done and dusted.”
Northern Gas Networks’ Gwen Evans earlier explained how the bill was calculated.
She said: “In this instance, labour costs are higher than parts because we only needed to repair a small section of plastic pipe, which is a relatively low-cost item.
“Our charges are inclusive of travel time to and from the incident because our engineers are being called away from managing the gas network to attend an emergency call out.”
She later confirmed a change of heart.
She said: “We volunteered to reduce the bill as a gesture of goodwill to our customer.”
