HMV went the extra mile to help a reader who had complained about worthless gift cards.
David Lloyd’s cards had expired when he tried to redeem them at the music and entertainment store.
But bosses agreed to issue new ones after I asked them to look into the complaint.
I was alerted to the problem by David’s wife Sue, who told me that wheelchair-bound David had been ill for some time.
She said: “We did not deliberately let the cards expire, but there was a lot of other things to deal with.
“We were going to buy an iPod to download talking books for him. I was disappointed on David’s behalf when HMV said they could not do anything.”
David and Sue, of Fencehouses, Tyne and Wear, asked if I could change HMV’s mind.
And that’s exactly what happened when I took the case to spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.
He said HMV, in common with other retailers, imposed restrictions on the redemption of gift cards. He said: “Notwithstanding such considerations, however, I am profoundly aware of Mr Lloyd's condition.
“As a gesture of goodwill and as an exception to our standard policy, I would like to offer £100 worth of gift card/vouchers.
“I appreciate this is not the full £200, but, as I say, it is offered in good will and with our very best wishes to Mr Lloyd, who I trust is now well on his way to a full and speedy recovery.”
