A ROW over who's responsible for replacing a sooty carpet has broken out.
Michael Hope claimed the new floor covering was damaged when a tradesman dislodged two bricks in a chimney breast.
But plasterer Paul Agnew, of Birtley, Gateshead, claimed the carpet was already marked.
Michael, of Sunderland, returned home to find the mess in the living room.
He said he had left Mr Agnew alone in the house to carry out some plastering work after a fire.
He had recently replaced carpets throughout the house costing a total of £1,800.
Michael said: “I was shocked when I opened the door, switched on the lights, and saw the mess. Someone, presumably the builder, had tried to vacuum the soot but it had been ground in.
“He said the soot had gone through the sheets he had put on the floor.
“Mr Agnew agreed to have it professionally cleaned but all it did was reduce the black stain.
“I was left with no choice but to get a quote for a new carpet for the room, but the builder refused to pay.
“He sent a letter claiming the carpet was ruined before he started the job, which I found astonishing.”
I wanted to get Mr Agnew’s side of the story but he was not willing to discuss the complaint.
He said: “I explained everything in the letter.”
