A FAMILY abandoned by the RAC at the Appleby Horse Fair have won compensation.
The Sunday Sun told last month how the motoring organisation refused to help Craig Kelly, his wife Clare and their four children when their car broke down at the event.
Patrolmen said they were too scared to attend the controversial fair, popular with the travelling community, because of trouble in the past.
Craig, of Gateshead, had to make his own arrangements to get his family home.
It cost £100 for the car to be towed several miles to a lay-by on the A66 and another £240 to get home.
At the time, as reported in our news pages, the RAC said they would be carrying out a full investigation.
Now I can reveal they have apologised for the mistake in not going to the rescue of the family and have sent partial compensation.
Craig, 40, said: “We had been members of the RAC for six years so we called them up.
“No one came within three hours so I rang them again and was told the patrols had refused to come to Appleby because of the travelling community.
