Hi-five for the refund

COMET went the extra mile for a customer who wanted to return a hi-fi and laptop following a family bereavement.

Wes Dixon told me how his mother-in-law Joan Phillips had wanted to return the newly-bought items following the death of her husband Gilbert.

He said managers at the Comet store where the equipment was bought had said the sale could not be reversed.

But I took up the complaint – and bosses agreed Joan, 85, of Chester-le-Street, County Durham, could have a refund after all. Wes said: “The boxes were never opened when Gilbert passed away.

They paid £350 for the computer and £140 for the hi-fi and I would have thought Comet would have done something after hearing about the circumstances.”

I spoke to Comet where spokeswoman Holly Underwood agreed to a refund.

She said: “A member of our Directors Office spoke to Mrs Phillips’s son-in-law last week and we have arranged for collection of the hi-fi. Mrs Phillips has now decided to keep the laptop and we posted a cheque refund to her last week.”
