Software update could fix John’s sat nav glitch

THE manufacturers of a sat nav system have launched an inquiry after a customer claimed it showed the wrong speed limits on some roads.

Long-distance driver John Butler bought the Garmin model via the internet.

He said the Dezl 560 system, which he thought was calibrated for HGVs, gave incorrect information.

John, of Sunderland, said: “When it was in truck mode it was showing speeds for cars.”

He added: “It was showing 60mph on single track roads where the legal limit for trucks is 40mph.

“I also noticed that the speed camera warnings were not correct.

“Garmin exchanged the device after I complained but I still have the same problem.

“They gave me a software update but this altered the speed on single roads to 50mph which is still wrong.

“I paid £360 for the device, which is much more than a sat nav meant for ordinary cars, but I feel Garmin have not done enough to resolve this problem.”

I alerted Anthony Chmarny, public relations manager of Garmin (Europe) Ltd about John’s complaint.

He admitted there was a software problem which engineers were trying to fix.

He also said staff had been reminded to tell customers about the system’s limitations.

Anthony told me: “Our software engineers are looking at ways to incorporate better information on the speed limits for particular vehicles.

“This is currently being looked at and it is hoped that a routine software update will be available early 2012 to add this speed information to the Dezl 560.

“Currently, the Dezl 560 will not change the speeds for the size of the vehicle that is being driven.

“I have asked our customer service team to contact Mr Butler and see if they can resolve his complaint and offer some form of a gesture of goodwill.

“I have also asked them to ensure staff are aware the Dezl 560 only offers national speed limits and does not, at the present time, offer advice on the specific truck speed limits.
