IN a moving ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of iconic landmark the Angel of the North, 10 lucky couples renewed their vows under its wings.
They arrived in a pink bus for the special event, led by the Bishop of Jarrow Mark Bryant and witnessed by their families and friends.
Ian Brown, 35, and wife Charlotte, 33, from Hexham, Northumberland, were one of the couples chosen after a Gateshead Council competition.
Charlotte said: “We were originally married on the day the Angel of the North was erected. I was interviewed on the morning of the wedding by Radio Newcastle, where I was asked if I would like to be married underneath the Angel.
“At the time I thought it would be too windy but it seemed ideal to renew our wedding vows underneath the Angel 10 years later.”
John Metcalfe, 52, and wife Beverley, 50, travelled from Teesside to say “I do” again.
Beverley said: “We’ve been married 30 years. Time for us is rare as we’ve fostered over 150 children in 14 years. The Angel is the perfect setting to renew our vows as I always say it protects all the children we have cared for.”
Around 100 couples entered the competition and the winners were picked by the Bishop of Jarrow and the Mayor of Gateshead, David Lynn.
