IS raising the price of alcohol the answer to binge drinking?
DENNIS GARRETT, 62, pipe fitter, Eighton Banks, Gateshead: “No. I’ve worked in Norway and various countries and the price of their drink is treble ours and they still go binge drinking.”
MATT HOVELL, 29, doorman, Essex: “Absolute rubbish. Regardless of the price of alcohol you’re going to get people drinking anyway.”
VALERIE GRAY, 62, retired careworker, Forest Hall, Newcastle: ”Definitely not. People will drink regardless of how much it costs. If they can’t buy it, they’ll pinch it.”
JOHN PAGE, 25, sales assistant and part- time student, Heaton, Newcastle: “No, because I think people will just go to supermarkets and get more tanked up before they go out.”
CLAIRE ST PIER, 20, student nurse, Essex: “It can be because if it’s just a pound a drink you’re just going to get more.”
CHRIS LAND, 21, mathematics management student, Newcastle: “No. Because people are used to the high prices of alcohol at the minute anyway.”
