Surfers rule the waves

Tynemouth surfer Sandy Kerr in action

IT looks like California but is instead the sunny North as surfers took advantage of ideal weather conditions.

They were riding a crest of a wave at Tynemouth, North Tyneside, one of the best spots in the country for surfers.

And with warm sun and a westerly wind with gusts at 16 knots yesterday, things couldn’t have been much better for them.

Sunny spells are predicted again for today, so surfers can continue California dreaming for a little while longer.

Yesterday also featured a sunny day out at the annual Northumberland Miners’ Picnic at Woodhorn, Ashington, where pensioner George White was finally recognised for his war service.

George was one of 25 Bevin Boys who received a badge marking their work down the pits.

George, 83, of Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, said: “It’s been a long time coming but I am very proud that the Government has recognised us.”
