Elton John plays at Darlington FC ground

A FOOTBALL club showed off their biggest signing last night and they got him for a song!

Darlington FC, known as the Quakers, played host to music legend Sir Elton John and his band for an outdoor gig. And the star really did let the sun go down with an evening concert attended by 15,000 fans.

The pitch was transformed into a stage for the night as Sir Elton performed a selection of his hits. Fans braved the rain and cold to listen to the veteran singer, whose numerous hits include Daniel, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, and Candle in the Wind, at the Darlington Arena.

There had been fears the concert would be called off at the last minute due to bad weather. A Darlington FC spokesman said: “The club received lots of calls from people asking if it was going to be cancelled.”

But the show went on with Sir Elton pro- tected by a canopy. A spokesman for the star said: “Elton is doing a summer tour of foot- ball stadiums. He’s quite pioneering and likes to perform in new and unusual venues.”

The concert coincided with the 125th anniversary of the club.
