Safety blitz reduces crashes
A THREE-month road safety campaign by a police force has cut casualty figures.
North Yorkshire Police launched Operation Anvil in March.
The initiative saw fatalities reduced from 19 last year to 16 this year; a reduction in serious injury from 187 in 2007 to 119 and all road collisions tumble from 276 last year to 162.
Inspector Dave Brown, head of strategic roads policing, said: “We are determined to make our communities safer and reducing collisions supports that objective.
“While the results may just appear to be a number, in reality it means there are 71 fewer families who have not suffered the devastation of the death or serious injury of a loved one on the county’s roads.”
More than 11,000 vehicles were stopped, 2656 speeding offences recorded, there were 1033 seatbelt violations, 414 people were caught using their mobiles while driving, and 224 vehicles were found without insurance.
