North troops head for Cyprus

AN ARMY battalion which recruits soldiers from across Cumbria has been stationed in Cyprus.

The 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment — which is made up of 550 soldiers from throughout the north west — had previously been stationed at Catterick.

But, after seven years in North Yorkshire, it has now moved to Cyprus where it will take the role of Theatre Reserve Battalion, TRB.

This means the battalion is on permanent standby to deploy on operations, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan, when required.

Lieutenant colonel Mark Kenyon said: “I think the soldiers were eager for change and that is exactly what they have got. TRB is a huge commitment for Cyprus battalions and it is one that I am relishing.

“We have never done an operational tour in Afghanistan and the soldiers are looking forward to it.

“Afghanistan is a very different operational environment and is a much more varied role.”
