Ark Royal comes to town

HUNDREDS of people toured one of Britain’s most famous aircraft carriers during its brief visit to the North.

Members of the public descended on North Tyneside to take a free tour of HMS Ark Royal.

The ship, which was built on Wallsend, is in the middle of a five-day visit to the region and yesterday it was opened up to the general public.

The ship, which has been deployed all over the world, is fitted with four Olympus gas turbine engines which propel the ship at a speed in excess of 30 knots.

It is home to 682 sailors who have recently been on exercises in Arctic Circle, Norway and the United States.
