Four years ago the Sunday Sun revealed incidents of dogging in Northumberland.
Police warned motorists about parking in laybys near Belsay. And Eglingham residents were furious about website claims of a “Swingers and Doggers Club” close to their homes.
A spokesman for Durham police said the bitter weather was not deterring couples.
“We are aware of a number of areas in County Durham and Darlington which are used for this sort of activity and they are monitored regularly by our officers.”
According to one of numerous websites advising of suitable locations, dogging hotspots abound across the region.
Locations include a lay-by near the viaduct at Bishop Auckland, a picnic area on A68 at Crook, and on the A66, eastbound from Darlington towards Stockton, “a long layby, set back from road, about half-way between Darlington and Stockton. Late nights around 11.30, various activity including male/female couples”.
Also included is Causey Arch, Stanley, and Tow Law, both County Durham.
In Sunderland the A184 heading west from Testos Roundabout is highlighted.
And areas of Cramlington, Seaton Sluice and Stakeford, both Northumberland, Marske in Teesside, Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, and South Shields, South Tyneside, are also mentioned by the websites.
