Drunk yobs wreck boxing night for charity

The cash was being split between St Clare’s Hospice in Jarrow and the Glen Corner Trust, named after the Harton boy stabbed to death on his 16th birthday in 2006.

His grandmother Pat McDougall, who was among the guests, thanked the organisers for their efforts but slammed the troublemakers.

One guest, who did not wish to be named, said: “It was a superb night until these morons sadly managed to ruin it for everyone.

“Credit to the organisers who sensibly brought the boxing to a swift conclusion on the grounds of safety.

“I’m sure that the vast majority who had, up until then, enjoyed the night were disgusted by this mindless violence.

“When you consider it was a charity event for two extremely worthy causes, it’s sad to see such scenes.”

Fifteen young amateur boxers from across the borough had come together under the name South Tyneside Select to take on Yorkshire rivals Eastfield and Humberside Select.
